Stay Far Away From Trouble

The Formative Years.:

Do we need a federally funded study to show that children should engage in more physical activity including during the (perhaps longer) school day?

1.  Frequent breaks from staring at the print in books prevent the eyes from adapting to close subject matter and thus reduce nearsightedness.

2.  Increased use of the muscles in early years stimulates muscular growth and improves physical fitness for the future.

Walt Disney World: A Study in Inflation and Shortages

Waiting lines to go on rides and also to eat in restaurants are getting longer these days. It is even reminiscent of lines in grocery stores in the former Soviet Union. This is despite increases in ticket prices well above the national inflation rate. To some extent people can make reservations including for rides (fDisney's Fast Pass and Priority Seating) but that capability is also maxed out on many occasions. The ultimate study in inflation versus shortages, not tried yet, would be to put a price tag on reservations and observe how long waiting lines get for unreserved time slots.

Hurricane Victims -- Do Not Rush To Rebuild  You don't want to get stuck with a shoddy contractor because all the good contractors were booked up.

It is not safe to go back to hurricane stricken regions. There may be armed bands of looters and marauders holed up in a nearby house waiting to pounce on you, rape you, rob you, and carjack you.

If your home suffered a lot of damage, seriously consider selling what is left without rebuilding. Rebuilding is far different from moving into a new house that is complete before signing the papers. When you rebuild you have a big additional task, watchdogging the contractor, or being the "general contractor" and supervisor of subcontractors. Most people are not good at those jobs and end up spending much more money than they expect in order to get the house rebuilt.

If you do rebuild it is much better if you make all the payments manually and the contractor never draws money. The amount of work accomplished should always be more than the amount of money paid as the rebuilding progresses. Try not to hire contractors who want money up front or money ahead of the work.

Apply for forgiveness of late fees and apply for reinstatement of lapsed insurance policies if you were unable to make payments because you were evacuated. Apply for rebate of roaming charges on cellular telephones.

Many public libraries have internet computers and many will let guest evacuees use them to check bank accounts, email, etc. Some hotels will also let evacuees use their business center internet stations if these stations are not owned by a third party.

Use the 800 , 888, 877, or 866 number of your bank and your credit card company to find out the latest status and transactions on your accounts. As soon as possible, even if it is weeks after the fact, ask your bank to restore any money lost to unauthorized fraudulent transactions.

Avoid unnecessary long distance calls.

Look for gas stations long before you get to empty. This way you can take advantage of lower prices per gallon you see along the way.

You got a notice saying you owe money for some reason you never heard off such as a car accident you were not in. Here is one account.

Heard on the Tom Martino talk show, early April 2005.

A home buyer lost his deposit when the mortgage company took a long time to process the loan application and finally declined the loan.

The buyer should have notified the seller that financing was not approved, prior to the dealine for obtaining a loan commitment. This way, the seller has to return the buyer's deposit or extend the time allowed to obtain a loan commitment.

Sometimes the seller wants proof that financing was declined. The buyer should still notify the seller by the deadline even if written proof has not yet been obtained. The buyer should quickly try to get something in writing from the lender. Then, if the lender fails to deliver proof of loan denial by the deadline the seller is not permitted to call off the deal and also keep the deposit.

Better: The buyer should have written into the house sales agreement that if financing is declined at any time, the buyer may back out of the deal and receive his deposit back.

WASHINGTON (April 4, 2005, Reuters Ltd., AOL News) - The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Individual Retirement Accounts, a popular way to save for retirement used by millions of Americans, are shielded from creditors in bankruptcy proceedings.

In addition, Social Security benefits, company pensions, 401(k) plans and other benefits tied to age, illness or disability are protected under federal bankruptcy law.

Another Viewpoint On Identity Theft  (11/5/03)

So someone says you owe him money and you don't?

A lot of identity theft victims end up spending a lot of money because they don't know their rights.

An agreement to repay a debt is often called an IOU. Here is an easy tip to remember. The creditor, the person who wants to be repaid, has to prove all three, the I, the O, and the U!

The creditor has to prove the I. He has prove that you are the person who owes the money. The creditor has to prove the O. He has to prove that money is owed. The creditor has to prove the U. He has to prove that he is the person who has the right to get the money.

Proving the I is usually the hard part. If the creditor can't prove the I, you don't have to pay him.

Don't Misuse Tools

If you use the wrong tool, you can cause damage that makes a job take much longer! One hard to see detail is the difference between Allen wrenches and Torx wrenches. The Allen wrench fits into a hexagonal hole in the bolt or screw. The Torx wrench fits into a hole that looks more like a six sided star. Using the wrong kind of wrench can deform the hole to the point where the correct wrench will not work either.

Special Note -- For Servicemen and Reservists going on Active Duty

Tell your banks, your mortgage company, your credit card companies, your car finance company, your landlord, your stockbrokesr, your insurance companies, anybody whom you have financial dealings with, that you are going on active duty. This will greatly reduce problems with identity theft or wrongful seizures. Have somebody, preferably a relative or friend, check all of your bank statements, mortgage statements, and the like.

We are offering, on a limited basis, to check and proofread your finances for you. We do charge a fee. We will also help dispute problems with credit cards, etc. If you are interested and cannot find a friend or relative to do it for you, e-mail ajaynejr@aol.com
